US passes debt ceiling bill

FXStreet (Bali) - The US passed the debt ceiling bill as widely expected, however, the results (221–201 in favour) reveal a growing division among the Republican party, after 28 Republicans voted for the bill.

The US House of Representatives agreed to suspend the US debt ceiling, which now guarantees funding for the US government through until March 2015. The deal will now head to the Senate, where democrats will approve it, and finally off to Barack Obama for signing.

According to a post deal analysis by Matt Fuller of Roll Call: "Of the 28 Republicans voting for the debt ceiling, there were only four members of GOP leadership: Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, and Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam of Illinois. As a matter of principle, the speaker rarely votes, making this one particularly notable. What is also notable is how GOP leadership was split on the measure."
